Constitution of Area and Board

The South Burdekin Water Area and Board originally constituted by Order in Council 31st March 1966, continues existence under the Water Act 2000.

"To constitute a Water Area and to construct works of improvement of subterranean water supplies and to constitute a Board for constructing, maintaining and administering such works."

"The said area is constituted to utilise part of the flow of the Burdekin River to replenish subterranean water supplies of the southern part of the Burdekin Delta and to thereby increase the quantity and improve the quality of supply available from this source for irrigation, domestic, stock and industrial purposes.

Function

The South Burdekin Water Boards' main function is to carry out water actvities within the South Burdekin Water Area.

Powers

South Burdekin WAter Board is a register Service Provider under the Queensland Water Act 2000 holding registration number SP302 for carrying out its function as a Category 2 Water Authority under this Act (S569, Water Act 2000).

Generally, the Board has the power under the Water Act 2000 to:

  • make and levy rates and charges
  • take land
  • employ people; and
  • delegate its powers
